Devonshire Parish of Bermuda.

If you are looking for beauty and tranquility,  Devonshire Parish is a tranquil area accented with lush, rolling countryside, marshes and nature reserves.  Always a destination for nature lovers, Devonshire is lacking on hotels, shops and restaurants.

Take time to visit the Palm Grove Gardens, on South Road.  The property is owned by Sir David Gibbons, who allows visitor access Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.  The Gardens feature about 20 species of palms, the grounds include numerous ponds, a moon gate and a house with a wishing well. Up the hill from the moon gate is a pond with a grassy map of the Bermuda islands set in the middle of it. The pinks and blues of water lilies and hyacinths in bloom completing the overall effect.  Also located along South Road, just east of the gardens, is the small Edmund Gibbons Nature Reserve. Consisting of a pond and marshlands, the reserve is home to local flora and fauna and attracts migratory birds.

Located on Montpelier Road, is The Arboretum, a 22 acre site that was replanted with trees and shrubs following Hurricane Emily in 1987. Although it is now more of a park rather than habitat, it features several interesting tree and plant species, such as ornamental and fan palms, golden shower trees, and Bermuda olivewood. On Middle Road is the Old Devonshire Church, built in the 17th century; its foundation,  dates from 1716. The church was re-built following an explosion in 1970.

Yet another find in the area is the Palmetto House. It is one of the few examples of an early 18th-century cruciform house. Palmetto House is open to the public on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
