Hamilton Parish of Bermuda.
Hamilton
Parish will be to the East which covers most of the Harrington Sound. One of the parish's landmarks, the
Bermuda Aquarium, Museum & Zoo is located at Flatts Inlet, the only boat
entrance into the sound. Built in 1926 and opened in 1928, it is one of
the oldest continuously operating aquariums in the New World. Here you
can learn about the intriguing wildlife and environment of Bermuda, plus
the wildlife of other islands, including Australasia, Madagascar and the
Caribbean islands. Tours are available Fridays from 8:45 a.m. to 10:30
a.m.; and free animal feeding tours are offered at 1:10 p.m. daily from
April through September. Tours are given on Saturdays and Sundays only
in the months of October through March. The Bermuda Aquarium, Museum &
Zoo also sponsors children's programs and camps throughout the summer
months, plus lectures and nature walks.
The Bermuda Perfumery and Gardens, on North Shore Road in Bailey's Bay,
is well worth a visit. Dating back to 1929, Bermuda's one perfumery is
still thriving in a quaint Bermudian farmhouse that is nearly 250 years
old. Guides explain the ancient process of extracting fragrance from
flowers, detailing how perfume was made in the past, as well as how it
is made today. A nature trail winds through six acres of lush gardens
bursting with hibiscus, ginger, passionflower, old garden roses, orchids
and blooming vines. Rest areas let you pause and admire the fragrant
splendor. The Bermuda Perfumery and Gardens are open Monday through
Saturday from 9:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday hours are from 10 a.m. to 4
p.m. during the months of April through October only. Admission is free.
The Crystal Caves, on Wilkinson Avenue, are named for the subterranean
pools of incredibly clear waters fed by Castle Harbour. Their known
discovery dates back to 1907. You can walk along a pontoon bridge to
admire the stalactites and stalagmites forming shapes that change only
one cubic inch every 100 years. The caves are open daily from 9:30 a.m.
to 4:40 p.m.
