Warwick Parish of Bermuda.
Warwick Parish has several things in common with Sandys Parish. Like
Sandys, Warwick also has a peculiar pronunciation the second w is
silent, so it sounds like "warik" and similar to Sandys, it has a
history that is closely tied to the sea and marine operations. At
various points in time, Darrell's Island, visible from Harbour Road,
served as a quarantine area for arriving ships, a site for a prisoner
tent-camp during the Boer War and a refueling station for transatlantic
vessels during World War II.
It was also the location of Bermuda's first airport, which opened in
1937. You may also notice numerous lovely old Bermuda homes across from
the ferry landing. Excellent examples of traditional Bermudian
architecture from more than a century ago, they feature stepped white
roofs, arches of whitewashed stone over doors and windows and thick
plastered walls of coral rock painted in cheery pastel colors.
The Nine Parishes of Bermuda
